    Numerical tool for tsunami risk assessment in the southern coast of Dominican Republic

    The southern coast of Dominican Republic is a very populated region, with several important cities including Santo Domingo, its capital. Important activities are rooted in the southern coast including tourism, industry, commercial ports, and, energy facilities, among others. According to historical reports, it has been impacted by big earthquakes accompanied by tsunamis as in Azua in 1751 and recently Pedernales in 2010, but their sources are not clearly identified. The aim of the present work is to develop a numerical tool to simulate the impact in the southern coast of the Dominican Republic of tsunamis generated in the Caribbean Sea. This tool, based on the Tsunami-HySEA model from EDANYA group (University of Malaga, Spain), could be used in the framework of a Tsunami Early Warning Systems due the very short computing times when only propagation is computed or it could be used to assess inundation impact, computing inundation with a initial 5 meter resolution.     Confiabilidad de puentes de concreto presforzado dañados por corrosión

    Los puentes vehiculares con frecuencia sufren daños por corrosión, sobre todo, si están ubicados en la costa o si están expuestos a la humedad o impactos químicos. Por tanto, es conveniente contar con recomendaciones técnicas para evaluar su efecto en la seguridad estructural y proveer condiciones aceptables para la operación y el mantenimiento del puente. En este artículo se determina la variación del índice de confiabilidad de Cornell en función del tiempo en una viga en un puente vehicular simplemente apoyado, mediante el análisis del comportamiento en los cambios en los momentos de agrietamiento de las secciones transversales de una viga de concreto presforzado de sección cajón, obtenidos a partir de sus diagramas momento-curvatura. El análisis estadístico se realizó mediante simulación de Monte Carlo considerando como variables aleatorias la resistencia del concreto, el área transversal de acero de presfuerzo y la carga viva, y como variables deterministas las dimensiones de los elementos y la carga muerta. De los resultados obtenidos se observa que, a partir del inicio de la corrosión del acero de presfuerzo, en los primeros 4 años la variación en el índice de confiabilidad resultó poco significativa, mientras que en los años subsecuentes se presenta lo contrario disminuyendo a valores menores de 1.75 a partir de 6 años de iniciada la corrosión, lo cual no garantiza condiciones de operación aceptables para la estructura

    HySEA model verification for Tohoku 2011 Tsunami. Application for mitigation tsunami assessment

    In many aspects Tohoku-Oki 2011 mega tsunami has changed our perception of tsunami risk. The tsunami-HySEA model is used to numerically simulate this event and observed data will we used to verify the model results. Three nested meshes of enhanced resolution (4 arc-min, 32 arc-sec and 2 arc-sec) will be used by the numerical model. The propagation mesh covers all Pacific Ocean with more of 7 million cells. An intermediate mesh with 5 millions cells contains the Japanese archipelago and, finally, two finer meshes, with nearly 8 and 6 millions cells, cover Iwate and Miyagi Prefectures at Tohoku region, the most devastated areas hit by the tsunami. The presentation will focus on the impact of the tsunami wave in these two areas and comparisons with observed data will be performed. DART buoys time series, inundation area and observed runup is used to assess model performance. The arrival time of the leading flooding wave at the vicinity of the Senday airport, as recorded by video cameras, is also used as verification data for the model. After this tsunami, control forests as well as breakwaters has been discussed as suitable mitigation infrastructures. As particular case, we will analyse the evolution of the tsunami in the area around the Sendai airport (Miyagi Prefecture) and its impact on the airport. A second simulation has been performed, assuming the existence of a coastal barrier protecting the area. The role of this barrier in modifying tsunami wave evolution and mitigating flooding effects on the airport area are discussed. The protection effect of the breakwaters near Kamaishi (Iwate Prefecture) is also assessed. The numerical model shows how these structures, although did not provide a full protection to tsunami waves, they helped to largely mitigate its effects in the area.Acknowledgements.     Adaptive Telemetry for Software-Defined Mobile Networks

    The forthcoming set of 5G standards will bring programmability and flexibility to levels never seen before. This has required introducing changes in the architecture of mobile networks, enabling different features such as the split of control and data planes, as required to support the rapid programming of heterogeneous data planes. Software Defined Networking (SDN) has emerged as a basic toolset for operators to manage their infrastructure, as it opens up the possibility of running a multitude of intelligent and advanced applications for network optimization purposes in a centralized network controller. However, the very basic nature that makes possible this efficient management and operation in a flexible way-the logical centralization-poses important challenges due to the lack of proper monitoring tools, suited for SDN-based architectures. In order to take timely and right decisions while operat-ing a network, centralized intelligence applications need to be fed with a continuous stream of up-to-date network statistics. However, this is not feasible with current SDN solutions due to scalability and accuracy issues. This article first analyzes the monitoring issues in current SDN solutions and then proposes a telemetry frame-work for software defined mobile networks capable of adapting to the various 5G services.     Sucesos estresantes en mujeres mayores desde la teoría ecológica de Bronfenbrenner

    e sabe que los problemas de salud, los problemas familiares, la muerte de seres queridos y los problemas económicos, son los sucesos estresantes más frecuentes en adultos mayores, estos hallazgos han sido derivados de estudios descriptivos, lo que hace necesario profundizar sobre dichos sucesos en la vida de las personas mayores. Objetivo. Analizar, desde el modelo ecológico, los sucesos estresantes que experimentan un grupo de mujeres mayores mexicanas. Método. Veintiséis mujeres de entre 55 y 75 años de edad participaron en la técnica de grupos focales. Resultados. En el Ontosistema, se encontraron problemas intrapersonales, por ejemplo enfermedades como cáncer, diabetes, hipertensión y depresión, así como problemas de memoria. También, los cambios en el estilo de vida, principalmente por el envejecimiento. Otros sucesos estresantes en el Ontosistema fueron las experiencias traumáticas, relacionadas con la muerte de hijos, padres y hermanos, específicamente cuando existen enfermedades terminales. En el Microsistema, se observaron problemas en las relaciones interpersonales con hijos, pareja y padres. En el Macrosistema, las participantes expusieron la situación de violencia que se vive en el país, además, de los trámites de jubilación. Discusión y conclusión. Los resultados concuerdan con otros estudios en cuanto a la muerte de seres queridos y enfermedades como sucesos estresantes relevantes. Se identificaron contrastes respecto a los problemas económicos que no aparecieron como estresores, salvo en algunos casos, y se destacó la percepción de violencia.Al autor del artículo es alumnos del Doctorado en Ciencias de la Salud, Becario ya que es Programa PNPC-CONACY

    HySEA: An operational GPU-based model for Tsunami Early Warning Systems

    HySEA numerical model for the simulation of earthquake generated tsunamis is presented. The initial sea surface deformation is computed using Okada model. Wave propagation is computed using nonlinear shallow water equations in spherical coordinates, where coastal inundation and run-up are suitable treated in the numerical algorithm. Generation, propagation and inundation phases are all integrated in a single code and computed coupled and synchronously when they occur at the same time. Inundation is modelled by allowing cells to dynamically change from dry to wet and reciprocally when water retreats from wetted areas. Special effort is made in preserving model well-balanced (i.e. capturing small perturbations to the steady state of the ocean at rest). The GPU model implementation allows faster than real time (FTRT) simulation for real large-scale problems. The large speed-ups obtained make HySEA code suitable for its use in Tsunami Early Warning Systems. The Italian TEWS at INGV (Rome) has adopted HySEA GPU code for its National System. The model is verified by hindcasting the wave behaviour in several benchmark problems. Numerical results for an earthquake-generated tsunami in the Mediterranean Sea is presented and computing time analysed. The interest of using higher order methods, analysing numerical schemes from first order up to order five, in the context of TEWS, is also addressed. Tsunami codes do not usually use higher than second order methods.     A two-waves TVD-WAF type scheme for solving 2D shallow-water equation is considered together with a first and second order HLL scheme. Comparison among the different schemes will be performed to check the performance for the proposed one.     Risk factors and outcome associated with the acquisition of linezolid-resistant Enterococcus faecalis

    Objectives: Linezolid is a synthetic oxazolidinone antibiotic frequently used to treat vancomycin-resistant enterococcal infections. Vancomycin-susceptible Enterococcus faecalis can develop resistance to linezolid in environments with excessive linezolid use. The aim of this study was to define risk factors and outcome associated with the acquisition of linezolid-resistant E. faecalis (LREfs). Methods: A retrospective case–control study was designed including patients hospitalised from January 2014 to October 2017 at Hospital Civil de Guadalajara ‘Fray Antonio Alcalde’ in Guadalajara, Mexico. A total of 50 patients culture-positive for LREfs and 100 control patients hospitalised in the same room and time as the cases were included. Clinical and demographic data were collected and analysed. Results: Risk factors for the presence of LREfs included prior linezolid use [odds ratio (OR) = 6.74], prior clindamycin use (OR = 6.72) and previous surgery (OR = 5.79). The mortality rate was 18% for LREfs cases versus 9% for controls. Conclusion: LREfs has emerged and spread in our hospital, an environment in which linezolid use is considerable. Risk factors for LREfs are prior antibiotic use, including linezolid, and previous surgery

    The body mass index increases the genetic risk scores' ability to predict risk of hepatic damage in European adolescents: The HELENA study

    Background Hepatic disorders are often complex and multifactorial, modulated by genetic and environmental determinants. During the last years, the hepatic disease has been progressively established from early stages in life. The use of genetic risk scores (GRS) to predict the genetic susceptibility to a particular phenotype among youth has gained interest in recent years. Moreover, the alanine aminotransferase (ALT) blood biomarker is often considered as hepatic screening tool, in combination with imaging techniques. The aim of the present study was to develop an ALT-specific GRS to help in the evaluation of hepatic damage risk in European adolescents. Methods A total of 972 adolescents (51.3% females), aged 12.5–17.5 years, from the Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescence study were included in the analyses. The sample incorporated adolescents in all body mass index (BMI) categories and was divided considering healthy/unhealthy ALT levels, using sex-specific cut-off points. From 1212 a priori ALT-related single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) extracted from candidate gene selection, a first screening of 234 SNPs univariately associated was established, selecting seven significant SNPs (p < .05) in the multivariate model. An unweighted GRS (uGRS) was developed by summing the number of reference alleles, and a weighted GRS (wGRS), by multiplying each allele to its estimated coefficient. Results The uGRS and wGRS were significantly associated with ALT (p < .001). The area under curve was obtained integrating BMI as clinical factor, improving the predictive ability for uGRS (.7039) and wGRS (.7035), using 10-fold internal cross-validation. Conclusions Considering BMI status, both GRSs could contribute as complementary tools to help in the early diagnosis of hepatic damage risk in European adolescents
